Apple is acknowledging the difficulties involved in the transfer between the .Mac and MobileMe services and are compensating members. “We will be extending subscriptions by 30 days to customers free of charge to express our appreciation for their patience during the transition period,” said Apple Inc., in a statement.
Both MobileMe and .Mac subscribers are eligible to receive the 30-day extension. (See the terms and conditions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2408)
The problems with MobileMe—the solution to organizing information spread across multiple computers and platforms—are severe and varied. Users are complaining about browser incompatibility and an inability to read messages or even access the home page.
David Strom, former editor in chief of Network Computing, quickly canceled his service after his many contacts did not synchronize. He was only with MobileMe for three days, “long enough to see that it wasn’t working.”
Even free service isn’t enough to entice Strom to return to MobileMe. “I’m not going back any time soon. I think it’s great they’re trying to make good on their situation, but they have to prove to me that [the problems are] more than passing circumstances and that there’s something not fundamentally flawed with the product.”
Teams of developers are most likely busy solving MobileMe’s problems. But as of right now, the help desks are busier.
