The cherry wood frame is interchangeable for black wood, depending on your home décor.
Considering the target market for digital picture frames, they should be about as painless to set up as a new toaster. Except for a few slightly awkward experiences with the onscreen menu, setting up and using the Portable USA PU-10WE 10.4-inch wireless digital picture frame was almost as easy as toasting bread. Of course, we got much more lasting enjoyment from the never-ending slide show of our favorite photos displayed on the PU-10WE’s bright, sharp display than we ever could have from a slice of toasted rye. Transferring images from our MacBook Pro to the frame’s 1GB onboard memory via Bluetooth was quick and easy. You can also insert almost any type of flash memory card or connect the frame to your Mac with the included USB cable and transfer photos that way.
Unlike the plastic used on other digital frames, the PU-10WE sports a genuine wood surround (cherry or black)—so it fits in seamlessly with the “analog” frames on your mantel.
In addition to displaying pictures, the device plays MP3 files. We don’t advise transferring music from your Mac to the device wirelessly, however—the larger file size of MP3s seemed to choke via Bluetooth, but we had no trouble copying music to the frame when it was connected to our Mac with the (very short) USB cable. Sound quality won’t blow you away, but it’s good enough, and enhanced our enjoyment of the slide show, which played throughout the day, cycling through all our images and a dozen or so songs. You control playback with an included remote.
We didn’t love the frame’s onscreen menu, which is less elegant than what Mac users are accustomed to— mainly because you have to navigate using the arrow and Enter buttons. But remote control is a must, and it works.
