writeroom

Don't fall into the recursive WriteRoom screenshot.

Until someone creates a portable keyboard for the iPod touch and iPhone, the devices aren’t exactly fantastic for creating documents. And yet, for writers, students, or just really, really organized types, the ability to easily create and edit text documents on the go is  sorely needed. Sure, Apple included the über-weak Notes App, but Notes can’t even sync back to your computer… and it’s butt-ugly.

WriteRoom takes it’s cues from the similarly-named Mac app. The simple interface allows you to enter and edit text—like Notes—but with a few crucial differences. First off, the design is simple and clean. More importantly, rotating your iPod touch or iPhone 90 degrees brings up a larger, wider landscape keyboard. We found this larger keyboard to be considerably faster to type on, particularly for longer chunks of text.

Like Apple’s Notes, you can email text out of WriteRoom, or you can use Safari's built-in Bonjour networking (on Macs or PCs) to copy text to and from the iPhone via Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi sharing isn't secure—anyone on your local network can see documents on your phone while sharing is turned on. Still, it's a quick and easy way to move text back and forth.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Wi-Fi sharing is neat, but the landscape keyboard is what makes WriteRoom worthwhile.
