From the master mind that brought you the "Ziphone," comes this winter's tell all story of "Crashing The iPhone." Italian systems engineer Piergiorgio Zambrini created one of the first applications that unlocked the iPhone. Zambrini is now back with his latest discovery, a bug that can crash the iPhone, iPod touch, and potentially Apple computers.

Zambrini planned to publish news about the bug on Monday, but he is keeping all the juicy technical details for Apple. Zambrini praises Apple and Steve Jobs, but was determined to uncover all the glitches in Apple's software. The bug that Zambrini accidently found was in the audio portion of Apple's video format.

The audio bug crashes the iPhone instantly. It doesn't permanently damage the device, but it does take the the iPhone's OS a couple of minutes to reboot. The bug, which lives in a shared code library, could potentially be used to crash versions of OS X and some variants of the Linux OS. Forbes.com has confirmed that the bug does crash the most current generation of iPhones.

 

 

There is speculation that Zambrini's display may be part of his plan to secure the position of iPhone Security Engineer at Apple. Zambrini applied for the position back in July and hasn't heard back from the company. He hopes his recent discovery doesn't put him on the enemies list at Apple. He says he only wants to point out security issues to Apple so that they can develop stronger security protocols.
