With all the hype surrounding OpenCL, it’s no wonder that the buzz has
moved on to the integration of the new technology for the iPhone.
Imagination Technologies has advertised a multitude of job openings for
OpenCL engineers and programmers, which only leads us to believe that
the technology used in the new Snow Leopard will be a part of Apple’s
future handheld devices.
Imagination’s interest in hiring OpenCL developers means that the
product is incredibly relevant to mobile developers, especially since the company has worked on graphics acceleration before. Not only will Apple be the first to implement OpenCL within an operating
system, but they’ll also become movers and shakers of the mobile
platform with integration of OpenCL. The move could also curb the
likelihood of DirectX
monopolizing the computer market, just as the iPod did against
Microsoft’s Windows Media DRM.
Imagination is also the developer behind the PowerVR mobile graphics
and video processor cores, which are used in millions of mobile phones
and other handheld devices such as media players and GPS navigation
systems. The PowerVR graphics processors are also included in Apple’s
iPhone and iPod touch.
