If you have a family that closely resembles our own dysfunctional gene pool, then you know plenty of disappointed folks who desperately wanted an iPhone for Christmas. Instead, they got a high five and a pair of socks. Well, it seems there were plenty of people who aren't related to us that got exactly what they wanted, an iPhone... Oh wait... Never mind. They got an iPod touch... Looks just like the iPhone, and you can do all that neat accelerometer stuff on it. Games are cool.

Fancy little graphs have informed us that there has been a huge spike in interest in the iPod touch this holiday season. About double the interest according to Amazon. The marketshare graph shows real-time browser data for the iPod touch, showing a massive spike on Christmas day. This could probably be read that it's a lot easier to gift an iPod touch than an iPhone, and of course, a lot cheaper. Apple's strategy on marketing the iPod touch as more than just an MP3 player, but also as a gaming console, has seemed to have paid off.

Gaming developers, like "Hit Tennis" developer Mark Johnson, saw an almost four-fold increase in daily application sales on Christmas day compared to other days in December. This doesn't just go for games, but across all apps in the App Store. iTunes Connect launched after Christmas, allowing iPhone developers to check their sales stats, and needless to say, many were pleasantly surprised with their findings.
