Print It's been quite a while since the iPad's initial release, but plenty of companies are still debuting cases that can help your tablet device get through even the most perilous of situations. This week, for Best Case Scenario, we're reviewing the rugged Trident Kraken, the tough Otterbox iPad Defender Series, the camoflauged Sumo iPad sleeve and the stylish Sena Collega.
This case is massive. If you bought your iPad for portability and ease of use, than this may be a case you'll want to steer clear of. For one, it's very tough to get on--and even more annoying to try and take off. First, you’ve got to snap together the polycarbonate casing, and then slip on the silicon lining. The clear overlay also sticks to the iPad screen, which leaves weird rainbow color spots and deterred us from wanting to watch a flick. On the other hand, this Kraken case is made for rugged, outdoorsy types, so if you’re planning on tossing and tumbling your iPad around a tent, than the Trident Kraken will keep the dirt out and the iPad’s chassis scratch free. ($44.95)
Like the Kraken, this case also has a rugged shell made to withstand the harsh world in which the iPad is used. Commuters will enjoy this case because it will protect their tablet device from any scuffs it might endure on their arduous climb up the subway stairs. And cyclists will appreciate that if they take a fall, the iPad in their day pack will come up unscathed. Oh, and let’s not forget the slippery hands of children--this case will give parents some peace of mind for their kinder who might be more prone to dropping expensive gadgets.
However, you can’t protect an iPad without a little bit of prep work. The Otterbox is a complicated system. Like the Kraken, it’s a multistep process that takes a bit of patience. To install the case, users must first wipe the iPad clean, paste on a screen protector, attach the silicon lining, and then finally slip it into the hard shell enclosure. But once you’ve done all this, your iPad is well prepared for the next commuter apocalypse. ($89.95)
This is a very simple iPad sleeve. It comes in three colors: black (pictured), green, and red. The Sumo Camo iPad sleeve is made of neoprene material, so it won’t scratch up your iPad. It’s thin enough not to take up any extra room in your bag, but thick enough so that you’re not afraid of accidentally knocking the iPad off the kitchen table. However, you wouldn’t want to intentionally drop it because the Sumo isn’t more than just a sleeve. It’s extra protection for your iPad while it’s being towed in your bag, but it won’t protect it while you’re actually using the device. ($19.99)
This leather case from Sena will provide the protection the device needs without foregoing style. The iPad slips into the padded sleeve horizontally and zips up, and there are retractable handles that you can use to carry the iPad case as if it’s a purse. There’s even a side cargo pocket with button snap enclosure that’ll keep your iPad cable and a pair of ear buds on hand. Though the case is a bit pricey and a bit too bulky to stuff into a backpack, it comes in four different styles and is a nice alternative to some of the generic looking iPad sleeves on the market. ($150.00)
