Finding, training, and breeding frogs is the name of the game in Nimblebit’s excellent Pocket Frogs. Maintaining a habitat for your frogs might seem like nothing more than new-era Tamagotchi, but with so much to buy, and minigames for eating and breeding, this is much more a game than a virtual pet. Leveling and upgrading keeps the game addicting and impressive graphics and a solid polish makes this one a keeper.

Breeding pink and black frogs is just one of the many pleasures awaiting you in Pocket Frogs. Just one of many.

MovieCat! Is a movie trivia game with cutesy cat stand-ins. Sure, the premise isn’t much, but it’s not as gimmicky as it sounds. The app is so stylized and so well-polished, that we were less than surprised when MovieCat instantly earned it’s spot in the new and noteworthy section of iTunes. All movie buffs and cat lovers should download this app right meow, as it’s absolutely purrfect for a paws in your workday.

Why are those cats dressed like humans? That’s just ridiculous.

Tacking “HD” onto iPhone games can mean that with a little optimization, designers can sell the same game for about three times the original’s price. Though some gamers have been badly burned by these “new” games, there are some games that you really have no choice but to buy twice. GTA: Chinatown Wars is one of those games.
Chinatown Wars worked remarkably well on the iPhone (and Nintendo DS, for that matter) and its transition to iPad is more than just a little screen optimization. As the iTunes description states, GTA has new control layouts, higher polygon-count models and new and improved lighting effects. The game looks amazing, plays amazing and, well, is amazing. No one interested in hardcore games on the iPad should have any hesitations about downloading this one. For everyone else, there’s still Pocket Frogs.

You can cause total mayhem or be a law-abiding citizen. But you’ve got a rocket-launcher. Some choice.
That’s it for this week. Enjoy the frogs in your pockets and cats in your movies. We’ll be busy running down civilians.
