With new Apple TV boxes en route to their lusting owners at long last, Apple has posted a copy of new firmware for the device which has been confirmed to be a variation of iOS -- and the hacker community has already raised everyone’s excitement level by claiming it can be jailbroken, just like other iOS devices.
MacRumors is reporting that Apple has posted a new firmware file to their servers for the latest and greatest Apple TV. AppleTV2,1 Firmware (Build 8M89) has been confirmed to be a variation of iOS 4.1 -- but don’t get excited, because it won’t be running your iOS apps just yet, although Apple CEO Steve Jobs claims that door might be opened “when the time is right.”
However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to have some fun with your new Apple TV in the meantime. According to Engadget, the Dev-Team’s blog has already confirmed that the new Apple TV firmware has already fallen victim to their Shatter exploit, which means the device can be jailbroken to do your bidding in the future, just like the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
The Dev-Team aren’t the only ones excited to jailbreak the new Apple TV, either: The fine folks at Firecore, LLC already have a gaggle of ATVs en route and plan to extend their popular ATVFlash to the new box as well.
And before you ask: No, the new firmware is not intended for those of us with older Apple TV boxes, so don’t even try, hmm-kay?
