If you love running as much as you love your iPhone, there’s a special treat waiting for you in the App Store this week: Nike has updated their popular Nike+ app with a a GPS-enabled version.
9to5Mac is reporting that Nike+ GPS is now available in the App Store, which tracks your runs with GPS rather than the old manual method using Nike+ sensors. If you’re the type of runner who needs some motivation to get going, the app will give it to you -- while you run and after you finish -- from some of Nike’s top celebrity athletes.
“The Nike+ GPS app helps you get the most out of every run by tracking where you go and motivating you to take it further,” the app description reads. “Download it on the go and start running anywhere.”
Nike+ GPS allows you to track every indoor and outdoor workout with ease, and without the need for a sensor, since the app taps into your iPhone’s GPS chip. Among the features are the ability to record your pace, distance and run route using the iPhone GPS and accelerometer technology to focus on the run ahead and even “relive the run later,” celebrate your victories with motivational messages from Nike celebrities, get voice feedback as you run as to how you’re doing or even see where you are with just a tap and activate your personalized “PowerSong” for an extra boost.
If you like to share your runner data with others, the Nike+ GPS app also allows you to quickly send each run to Nikeplus.com where you can brag to friends, join challenges, set goals and connect with others in the Nike online community.
The Nike+ GPS app is designed for the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, but will also work with the iPod touch (second generation or higher) without the mapping capabilities. The 8.8MB download is only $1.99 and requires iOS 4.0 or later.
