It’s a date! Apple has made the rumored October 4 media event official on Tuesday morning with an invitation for the media to attend a shindig on Apple’s own campus. And there’s no mistaking what this event is about, because the subject of the invite makes it clear: “Let’s talk iPhone.”

It’s Friday, September 23 and that means the fall season has officially arrived on the calendar -- and with it will soon come iOS 5, iCloud, iTunes Match and another update to OS X Lion to help tie it all together on the Mac side. As proof that it’s getting closer, Apple pushed out a new OS X 10.7.2 build to developers on Thursday with what appears to be final release notes.

It’s simply amazing how all over the place rumors of Apple’s next handset have become -- what’s news one morning often gets snuffed out later that day with a completely contradictory rumor. Such is the case with the iPhone 5, which may miss its fall debut completely due to production delays.
