Well, this is the last weekend you have to relax and enjoy yourself before the ridiculous onslaught of holiday shopping and events consumes your every waking minute with errands and shopping and parties and decorating and trying to figure out how to wrap gifts and what to get and oh my we're getting a little excited (and a little exhausted) just thinking about it. Well, here's the week that was. Get at it. (Note, not Santa to our right.)
Well, well, well… it seems the public outcry of net neutrality fans have finally caught the ear of AT&T, who backpedaled slightly on their decision to limit FaceTime over cellular to only customers on their new Mobile Share plans. Now that iPhone 5 users can use the video chat service with their LTE connections, what about everyone trapped on 3G-equipped iPhones? Seems unlikely Ma Bell will budge a second time, but you never know...
Evernote is one of those services we've just grown accustomed to having around. The venerable organization tool is an absolute life-saver on both our Macs and iOS devices, and though many have tried, adequate alternatives are extremely rare. Thankfully, the Evernote team is not resting on its laurels, announcing big changes to both the mobile and desktop clients.
Looks like Microsoft has today all to itself -- after launching Windows 8 in New York City last week just ahead of Hurricane Sandy, the company now heads to San Francisco for its big Windows Phone 8 launch, which Google had hoped to steal some thunder from with an Android event scheduled for the same day. Unfortunately, even the mighty search giant couldn't predict what Mother Nature will do, so we'll have to get a dose of updated Android hardware after things calm down in NYC.
Call us rebels, but we can't condone phony limitations such as data caps or restrictions on cloud storage. That's why the quiet introduction of a $4.95 unlimited plan to Pogoplug Cloud piqued our interest on Friday. Unlimited cloud storage for dirt cheap with no file size limits? The mere idea makes us want to ditch Dropbox, Box and all the rest of 'em. If that's how you feel, read on to find out if the dream of an unlimited cloud actually delivers.
There's always plenty of news we miss throughout the work day, which is where our overnight recap comes in, mopping up the smaller stories and tidbits and putting them on display for all to enjoy. On this fine Tuesday morning, let's kick back and enjoy a handful of these stories before the craziness of Apple's media event tomorrow!
So, maybe Apple isn't making an HDTV after all? We'd actually be okay with that right now, given that Cupertino has plenty of cool stuff on their plate for the rest of the year, and frankly we're kind of sick of hearing analysts fawn over the possibility. (We're also not quite yet ready to buy a new HDTV for our own living room, so… just a little bit longer, hmm'kay, Apple?) This and several other stories make up our recap for this funky Friday, August 24, 2012.
Hey, the weekend is here! And we wouldn't want you to go away empty-handed, which is why we've rounded up five stories making the rounds that you might have otherwise missed today. So go ahead, kick back with a drink (or two) and bask in the glow of all the tech news for this fine Friday, August 3, 2012!
