With a subtitle like “The Next Generation Slicing Game,” KingHunt invites comparison to other titles in this done-to-death genre. Most slicing games — the definitive example being Halfbrick’s Fruit Ninja — are ostensibly endless: you’re free to keep playing as long as possible without failing. KingHunt’s hook is that it features all of the trappings of more traditional action games, like power-ups, life bars, distinct levels, and enemy bosses — but it lacks the timing and restraint to keep from feeling mindlessly chaotic.
Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride developer Halfbrick announced its next iOS game, Colossatron: Massive World Threat, at a panel at the PAX Australia gaming convention this weekend, revealing details about its story, gameplay, and development. Colossatron puts you in the role a giant robotic snake from outer space that's intent on doing as much damage as possible to the Earth. Producer Sean Druitt came up with the idea after noting that tower defense games tend to be passive once you’ve set up your defenses. “I wanted to do something where you could build things on the fly, and actually react to the environment around you while you're playing,” he explained during a panel discussion on the game.

Turns out it's still a line -- cut with the axe wielded by the mighty Jack Lumber. Luckily, the game isn't just a re-skinned knock off of Halfbrick's successful Fruit Ninja formula, as it actually improves upon it in a way that respects the original.

It would be easy for the Fruit Ninja brand to sell out to any license involving a blade, so it's hard not to be skeptical its recent edition, tangentially related to the Shrek spinoff film, Puss in Boots. While this tie-in is mostly a reduced version of its predecessor in new clothes, it contains one new addition allowing it to rise above the soulless cash-in.
Halfbrick has been responsible for some of the more memorable iOS hits to date -- notably Fruit Ninja and Age of Zombies -- and their latest, Jetpack Joyride, looks to make another strong impression on iPhone and iPad gamers when it launches this Thursday. I had a chance to play the universal app this weekend at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, and while the speedy side-scroller is based in the self-propelled running genre popularized by Canabalt and Halfbrick's own Monster Dash, the addition of the titular object really gives this high-strung adventure a fresh new feel of its own.
