Well, Autumn is officially here, gang, the beginning of the long indoor season if you live in a cold and rainy part of the country (hello, Seattle!). While the Mac|Life staff will be kicking back with 80 degree weather this week, some of the rest of you might be cuddled up indoors, listening to the rain, reading on your iPads, watching a movie or two, or at least fighting with some Angry Birds. Here's a full dose of our best of the week to help you make the most of your rainy days.
GV Mobile, the unofficial Google Voice application, may actually make it back to the App Store after all. After the GV Mobile application was pulled by Apple almost 2 years ago, along with the Official Google Voice application (which never made it past the approval process), many Google Voice users wondered if they would ever see the Google Voice functionality in an app on their iOS devices. But a recent tweet by GV Mobile application developer, Sean Kovacs, revealed that Apple has finally broken their silence about Google Voice on the App Store.
Do you remember how exciting the notion of Google Voice on the iPhone was? No, not the consolation-prize web app version of Google Voice available to us now, but Google Voice on the hoof, one tap away from use on your Apple-branded device. Sadly, the dream of a native iPhone app for the service has never materialized, leaving Google Voice users without the on-device support or features that the excellent service warrants. How did it all go wrong? Google and Apple used to be so good together. We always thought they'd be the couple to make it out alive.
Google may have been shut out from the iPhone with Google Voice, but a new video and screenshots appear to show an as-yet unreleased application for the Mac which seems to leverage the service with their Gizmo5 acquisition from late last year.
Now here's some good news: Google's web-enabled, do-everything communications management platform--Google Voice--is now available to everyone (and by everyone we mean everyone living in the United States.)
Another installment of "In Case You Missed It" because let's face it, the last week has been madness. Driving anywhere in town took twice as long, there were lines everywhere stretching around the block, even at ice cream stores in Alaska, and people kept coming over to visit or asking you to come to their parties. We'd be surprised if you had time to update your Facebook status even.
