According to an IHS iSuppli teardown, the CDMA iPhone 4 costs less to manufacture than the previous version of the iPhone 4, despite utilizing more futuristic internals. The total cost of materials to Apple? $178.45.

Apparently, it pays to reduce the size of your “hobby” device. iSuppli has hit the books and come up with a cost estimate for the new Apple TV and compared to the original box, the new model is not only a quarter of the size but almost a quarter of the cost as well.

Market research firm iSuppli, ripped apart the brand new iPhone 3G, found the prices on all its itty-bitty parts and came up with the price per-unit paid by Apple. A whopping $174.33.

That's a savings of roughly $53 over the estimated iSuppli price of $227 for the OG iPhone. iSuppli estimates that Apple makes a per-unit gross profit of 55%. Apple's ability to buy in bulk, and its savvy bargain-shopping powers are cited as reasons for the drop in price.
