How do you make the iPhone more fun? You give it a robot to control. Enter Sphero, the plastic ball that you control with your iPhone. Though we covered it briefly at CES earlier this year, we got a better look at the device while perusing this year's E3 show floor. At first glance, it's hard to tell Sphero's purpose. But once it's calibrated with an iOS device, Sphero is all at once a toy, a game controller, and even a programming tool.
The summer is starting to heat up. We just got off the All Things Digital Conference and we're winding up for the final stretch before WWDC 2012 crushes out the news cycle. Is it the calm before the storm? Not quite, as a few news waves were made and we found a few apps worth your notice. Plus, you could have bid on these killer shades.
If your kids are going to be using your lovely Apple gear, you may as well protect it. And maybe you can pick up a new toy or two while you’re at it. We've picked out 8 of our favorite iOS toys for kids. Some you can control with your iPhone, and others just make your iPad easier to cuddle with. One thing is for sure: all of the things featured turn your iOS devices into kid-friendly gadgets.
It's our favorite time of year at Mac|Life HQ. Not only does Flo do her best to fatten us all up with her baking experiments (Team Pie!), but we also get to take a short break from doing things like benchmarking hardware and testing accounting software to play with toys. And really, who doesn't like toys? And this time around, we've got things that shoot*, and things that fly. Both make for very happy holidays around the office.
And speaking of happy holidays, you can enter for a chance to win the Griffin HELO TC iPhone-controlled helicopter shown in the video right here.
We've always wanted to fly helicopters, but pilot lessons cost way too much money. Now, thanks to the Griffin HELO TC, you can finally fly helicopters without a pilot's license. Just make sure you've got an iOS device—this bad boy is controlled directly from your favorite touchscreen.
We had a blast playing with it in our Fabulous Toys feature To enter, just leave us a message telling us what you think the best possible use for the Remote Controlled Helicopter would be! Oh, and only enter once, Ace.
Probably the coolest hack we've ever seen went down this week, as well as Apple letting a tethering app slip through the store before AT&T and pals whined like little babies and had it pulled. But that wasn't all, there was just about the biggest game of the year and more in the hottest stories of the week.
