BOO! That's right, that's right, it's that time of the year, when all the spooks and haunts in the world go out looking for candy and treats and the ever elusive, ghostly white iPhone, the ne'er to be seen specter. Here's the tastiest bits of Mac|Life from the week, giving you a little something to read while waiting for the knocking on your door tonight. Just don't bob for any Apple products; they don't care much for water.
This week, for Free App Friday, we're doing something special to help reel in the spookiest day of the year: Halloween. In all honesty, yours truly isn't a fan of all the scary things this holiday has to offer. But, Halloween can be all about the fun you share with your friends, from dressing in costume to swapping candy (no one wants to get stuck with a bucket full of Butterfingers, now do they?). The best part is that you can download a bunch of throwaway apps on your iPad and iPhone to ring in the celebration and get into the Halloween spirit!
This week's tips are all about getting things done on your favorite iOS device. I frequently have people asking me what I am doing with my new toy (i.e. iPad) and when I tell them I'm working, they don't believe me. The truth is that the iPad, or any other iOS device for that matter, can be used for fun, but more importantly you will probably find a use for them at any job. Therefore, after many queries and questions about apps that I use for work, I thought it might be a good time to share some of them with you.
So this week, I'll give you four app recommendations that will show you how to add a second display to your Mac, access computers remotely, store and access your data in the cloud, manage and view files of all kinds, and access Mac|Life content on your iOS devices.
These apps are seriously useful and if you like hearing about apps like these leave me a comment and I'll share some more app gems with you in the future. On the other hand if you have one you'd like to tell us about leave a comment about that too.
If you're in the market for a full featured RSS reader to deck your iPad out with, you could do a lot worse than Glasshouse App's The Early Edition--a cleverly designed application that takes your favourite RSS feeds and presents them to you in the form of a browsable, searchable newspaper interface that makes reading a pleasure. If you haven't had a chance to take the application for a test drive, here's your chance: For this weekend only, The Early Edition is being offered for the very reasonable prive of 99 cents--80% off of the application's regular price!
Between celebrating Bejeweled's ten year anniversary, the release of Peggle Nights, and all that Michael Jackson hoopla, we’ve been hearing quite a bit about PopCap. Well, now the usually quite game giant is pulling out all the stops. PopCap’s fastest selling iOS game, Plants vs. Zombies, has gone on sale for the first time since it was released in February. The reason? It's Halloween!
Yesterday we reported on a cool app called iDOS, a universal emulator that allowed you to run all kinds of elder technology on your iOS device, was pulled from the App Store less than 24 hours after its auspicious debut. Turns out there may have been a valid reason for Apple to pull it -- and it doesn’t involve its emulation powers.
Granted the sporting world may be focused on the start of the upcoming World Series, or an NFL season that's in full swing, but the NHL season is also underway. With that, iPad puck fans can look forward in the near future to being able to watch live games on their devices.
Sony got a boost in its image this week with the rumor that Apple is, apparently, forking over some big bucks to buy 'em. But Flo, Ray, and Nic think it's all bollocks. In addition, the three caballeros (um, two caballeros and one caballera?) talk about Dr. Raymond Soneira's study, and Nic even offers up his own Quick Tip of the Week.
Plus, we answered a few questions from the internet! The internet!!
Before we begin, a brief history: Pigs were invented in 1855, at the imaginative hand of fantasy writer R. S. Wilberton, and they have captivated our minds and hearts ever since. In this issue of Game Time, we check out the best iPhone and iPad games featuring these adorable, mythical creatures.
That’s right folks, it’s time for another Game Time. But first, jump the cut to see how you can win a copy of the Sims 3: Late Night Expansion pack!
