With all of Suda 51’s penchant for socio-political psychobabble, surrealism and punk-rock sensibilities, universal Frog Minutes is not the kind of game one would expect from his company, Grasshopper Manufacture. Frog Minutes is Grasshopper’s iOS debut, and when it was announced as a charitable project whose proceeds would aid victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami to hit the developer’s native Japan, all that was known about it was its name and amphibian-based logo. With Grasshopper’s pedigree and following, they probably could have released a game about navigating Japanese tax software and people would still buy it, and in some ways the quiet Frog Minutes is almost as mundane -- it’s an unexpected little app that involves, you guessed it, catching frogs.
We were very impressed by PopCap games huge $200,000 donation to Japan relief with their generous App Store sale earlier this month. However, (even though it's certainly not a competition) we were blown away when Valve announced today that they had raised $300,000 with a recent sale. What's more, the sale isn't even over yet. The items will be availabe for charity until April 6. Let's hit half a million!
Late last week we ran a story about a sale that PopCap Games, creator of the best-selling Plants vs Zombies and Bejeweled games was running to help victims of the tsunami in Japan. They discounted all of their iOS titles for 48 hours, and pledged to donate all of the proceeds to the Red Cross Japan Relief fund. We had no idea how successful to sale would end up being.
Following a report earlier this week that Japanese Apple Store locations had served as a means of communication for many in the beleaguered country after last week’s earthquake and tsunami comes word that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has pledged his company’s assistance with employees there.
Japanese company Capcom and its American counterpart, Capcom USA, along with SEGA will be slashing prices on many of their most popular games in order to raise money for Japan Relief funds. Notable titles like Street Fighter 4 and several Sonic the Hedgehog games are being included in the sale.
