Game Dev Story and Dungeon Village developer Kairosoft very nearly returns to form with its shogun-themed strategy and city-management hybrid, Ninja Village — but a promising setup and compelling core mechanic too soon devolve into tedious grinding. Managing a village full of ninjas trained in the art of war, your task is to build up a thriving local economy while battling rival lords, all in an effort to help the shogun reunify Japan.
Apartment living isn’t always the easiest thing. Between bills, managing limited physical space, and juggling a social life, ambition, and sanity, one’s existence in a hundreds-square-foot box is tough enough to maintain alone. Now imagine looking after 10, 20, or even 50 residents, all with their own faults and goals – not to mention keeping up with the maintenance and improvement of the building they live in. This is the task Dream House Days asks of you in assuming the role of apartment manager.
In the past, Kairosoft has brought us cartoonish simulations of what it's like to be a video game creator (Game Dev Story) or shopping mall proprietor (Mega Mall Story), among many others, but its latest iOS affair has you catch and train various elemental critters and then use them to explore your surroundings. While all this may sound a lot like a Pokémon game, you’ll soon realize that Beastie Bay is a civilization management game first and a monster-catching game second.
We're on the tail end of another great week for iOS games, including the new expansion for much-loved card game, Ascension, as well as the new game from the creators of Super Stickman Golf, plus a little indie favorite called Super Crate Box. There’s also some great stuff not too far off on the horizon, including the iOS debut of multiplatform hit Cthulhu Saves the World, along with the amazing-looking Star Marine.
There weren't a ton of news stories for this week's iOS gaming news round up, but there were quite a few stellar games actually released to the App Store. So rather than sticking with the formula, we're going to mix it up a bit this week. In lieu of some ho-hum news stories (and passing over lots of deserving games), we're going to be focusing 100% on games this week. Kairosoft has built a tiny cult empire on the strength of the simulation genre. Its first game, Game Dev Story, won the hearts of many game reviewers (including ours), and since that entry the formula hasn't deviated very much. Unfortunately, the "Story" series is starting to get a little bit long in the tooth, and we're hoping Kairosoft will branch out soon. Sadly, this formula is starting to overstay its welcome.
The awesome developers over at Kairosoft have revealed that their next iOS release will be a port of their Android game, Grand Prix Story. It's a fairly well regarded game, but the release will come with a catch.
We like the mall almost as much as Robin Sparkles, but we're even a bigger fan of just pretending we're going to a mall by playing an iOS game. Still better, designing our own mall. That's where Mega Mall Story comes in.
