The desktop computer market as a whole has been on a precipitous downward spiral for a few years now, but all that jazz means very little to Apple. In fact, it's a cause for celebration as Macs are popular like they've never been before. New research from IDC (via TechCrunch) shows the Cupertino company's market share reached record levels during Q3 2014, netting Apple a 13.4 percent market share.
These days, the very thought of finding Mac OS X on a machine that wasn't designed by the folks in Cupertino seems a bit like heresy. But according to an interview with former Sony president Kunitake Ando, reports Japanese journalist Noboyuki Hayashi (via AppleInsider), that almost wasn't the case. Indeed, if Steve Jobs (of all people) had has his way back in 2001, Sony's Vaio would have also run Mac OS.
Remember the days when pundits were clamoring on about how the iPad was just a fad and that it'd never have an edge over laptops and desktops? According to a report released this morning by research firm IDC, those days are over. By the end of the year, the study asserts, tablets will outpace laptops in sales volume, and--get this--by 2015, they'll even outpace desktops.

It's been a while since anyone has mentioned iPad sales. It's been confirmed that they're moving out the door as fast as Apple can move them, and there's also verification that Apple's will be increasing production on the tablet in the days to come. But it's taken some time for the full brunt of the iPad's tremendous success to be understood by the computer and retail industries. It would seem that the time for some schooling has come. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn has stated that the iPad is cannibalizing upwards of 50% of all laptop sales from his company's chain of stores.
