By default, Apple’s Safari browser is set to block cookies from third parties as well as advertisers, but it a new investigation has turned up evidence that this may not be preventing Google and others from simply ignoring the setting to better track the ads they are serving up.
Well despite some sad pandas in the financial prediction racket, Apple is hot hot hot. Sure, their last quarter sales were a wee bit lower than expected, but that was merely the collective intake of breath before the new model iPhone debuted. Naturally you wait until the new handset is out and with the iOS device line driving Apple's profitability, who didn't predict this? Apparently Wall Street. Anyway, Apple's hot whether they like it or not and here's some more weekly hotness.
Google today pushed a new release of its HTML 5 equipped web app for iOS users. The Google Music Beta player works with mobile Safari for iOS 4 users and it isn't so bad after all. It's smooth looking and works impeccably, though you'll have to allow it 25 MB of space. You can play any of your songs in your library, shuffle and search within your cloud library. It's also got multitasking enabled so that you can listen to music while accessing other apps. Unfortunately, this means that you still can't download the music within the app and access it offline.
As if the iPad doesn’t have enough choices for streaming movies and television shows direct to you, VUDU has announced that the company is now offering its library to tablet users -- but don’t go looking for it in the App Store, because the service is only available in your browser for now.
There are some pretty good reasons to stick with mobile Safari: it's the iPhone default, so links automatically route to there from other apps, it's pretty speedy, and, even though the app is simple to use, Apple's crammed a ton of functionality into that little guy -- whether in iPhone or iPad flavors. But sometimes... well, sometimes Safari leaves us a little cold, leaves us wanting something a little more full featured, something we don't have to install a bunch of bookmarklets to make work.
The Opera Mini web browser got a welcome update last week, bringing a new look and feel as well as long-awaited native iPad and Retina Display support -- which got us thinking, could be it good enough yet to take the place of Mobile Safari for your iOS web surfing?
Although we’re not getting them on our iOS devices here as yet, it appears that Google is rolling out some search page changes for Apple’s mobile devices with a fresh new look and tab-based user interface. Anyone else seeing this?
As much of a mobile revolution as Safari on the iPhone was, the browser isn’t for everyone. Just as there are choices on the desktop, there are now plenty of options on iOS for a different mobile browser -- and one of the latest for the iPad has hit the App Store with a slick new update.
Following Apple’s announcement of the iPad 2 at a media event in San Francisco, the company moved on to finalize details on the next version of iOS which is coming on March 11 to accompany the new device.
You’ve got to hand it to Google -- they may not be quick on the draw with features coming to iOS, but eventually they do get around to bringing their desktop-based browser features to Mobile Safari. The latest appears to be the “Instant Previews” feature.
