It’s another heavy week for new iPhone and iPad games, with several big-name releases intermingling with intriguing indies. A port of BioShock brings the classic console and PC shooter to iOS, plus Madden NFL Mobile takes another shot at freemium football and Tiny Tower Vegas adds gambling to its addictive sim concoction — and don’t miss the promising Nightmare Cooperative.
At least two very different kinds of development studios are having great sales on their apps. One will make you more productive, making tasks simpler, keeping you on schedule, turning paper into PDFs, while the other will give you some fun for all the time you've freed up. It's a win-win scenario for you, dear reader.
Like Angry Birds Star Wars before it, Star Wars Pinball pairs the beloved sci-fi franchise with a proven mobile framework. In this case, it's the excellent Zen Pinball, which serves up original digital tables that look and play like the real thing. Available as a universal standalone app, Star Wars Pinball delivers a great table based on The Empire Strikes Back, complete with moving sections that take after film scenes. Additional tables are sold within, and all can be purchased and downloaded within the main Zen Pinball app, though this is the only way that iPhone 5 players can currently experience the tables in full screen.
Duo Pinball aims to bring some of pinball's physical sensation back to the lap-based home experience, letting you affix a plastic dock to the back of any iPad — or less ideally, an iPhone or iPod touch — fire up a compatible app, and make use of the built-in plunger and side buttons for a seemingly more authentic feel. Powered by three AAA batteries and a Bluetooth link, the device pairs effortlessly and is easy to use, plus it'll hold your iPad snugly while you mash the deep blue flipper buttons — but the resulting sensation is less enthralling than expected.
Comic-Con may sadly be over after yesterday, but we've still got some good comic related news! Today we're hearing that the popular and critically lauded digital pinball game, Marvel Pinball, will be coming soon-ish to iOS. The only release date so far is "by the end of 2012" but that's better than nothing.
