We took last week off for the holiday, but the App Store didn’t, unleashing a load of new games while everyone was scarfing down turkey. So we’ve got a couple weeks’ worth of intriguing picks in the latest column, including the first episode of Telltale’s Game of Thrones series, the first free-to-play Peggle, and newly released ports of older Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest, and Oddworld favorites.
Each week, we highlight a selection of the most interesting, exciting, and unique new iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch titles released on the App Store. Compared to last week's new release barrage alongside iOS 7, this week will no doubt seem subdued, though EA's FIFA 14 soccer simulation is a major debut, and Pocket Trains will surely captivate those who loved Pocket Planes and Tiny Tower. Other standout titles this week include Shadowrun Returns, Buddy & Me, and Boson X.
Tabletop-gaming classic Shadowrun was released to a subdued audience of pen-and-paper die-hards in 1989, and quickly carved out a niche for itself by fusing fantasy with cyberpunk in a dystopian vision of the future that was all its own. More than 20 years later, Shadowrun Returns (developed by a team led by Shadowrun creator Jordan Weisman) borrows the 2D isometric view from an early '90s Super Nintendo adaptation, but it most embodies the open-ended heart of tabletop gaming. It's really about the democracy of storytelling.
