When Max Payne was first released on PC and consoles in 2001, there was nothing else like it. Featuring exceptional voice acting, a gritty storyline that could have been ripped from the pages of a James Ellroy novel, and action-packed gameplay that felt like it was on loan from a John Woo film, it quickly became the blueprint for countless other games. Slow-motion shootouts? Firing two guns whilst jumping through the air? You can thank Max Payne for them both. Now, more than a decade later, it’s finally available for iOS gamers to enjoy as Max Payne Mobile.

Zombie Gunship may be the first zombie-themed game where I'm not entirely sure the enemies are undead. Ostensibly they are, but that might be what the game wants you to think. Strapped to the gunner seat of an airplane flying over a survivor's bunker, you're tasked with murdering hordes of zombies while trying your best to avoid innocent casualties.
Warm Gun may be the master of adjectives on the App Store when it releases. It's a post-apocalyptic, Wild West, steampunk, multiplayer iOS first-person shooter. It's quite a mouthful, but the developer sent us a new video of the game in action today and it looks pretty great.
Mobile developer (and niftily-named outfit) Imperial Penguin announced the release of Subterran 1.0, the company's 3d tunnel flyer game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The game allows you to take the controls of a ship specially designed to fly dangerous missions through enemy tunnels and allows you to level up with your character beginning as an ensign and gaining ranks throughout the game to finish as an admiral. The title features 20 missions complete with obstacles to dodge, minerals to mine and enemies to defeat throughout this space adventure.
If there's one area that the iOS gaming platform has been lacking in it has definitely been quality multiplayer experiences. While the PSP has games like Monster Hunter and SOCOM and Nintendo DS has Mario Kart, the iPhone hasn't had all that many quality multiplayer games worth getting excited about. So our interest was definitely piqued when we learned about the announcemen of Crescent Moon Games' 8-player shooter, Deadlock.
Decades ago, in the United Skates of America roller rink in Rumford, Rhode Island, I was introduced to the joys of dual-stick shooter arcade games. Here, my lone robot warrior faced off against thousands of less-friendly robots, the only tactic being to dodge, refocus your fire in the direction needed and pray that the next available power-up would boost your weaponry or atomize the opponents on your screen entirely. This tradition lives on in Infinity Field, a new dual-stick space shooter developed by ForzeField Studios and published by Chillingo.
Wim Crouwel, a well-known Dutch graphic designer and typographer, has an interesting quote about Helvetica in Gary Hustwist’s documentary of the same name. “It shouldn’t have a meaning itself,” Crouwel said in praise of Helvetica’s neutral qualities. “The meaning is in the context of the text, not in the typeface.”
While few people are probably unaware of Helvetica’s existence at least peripherally -- it’s used in everything from advertisements to street signs -- Crouwel’s quote is particularly apt for describing Vetica, a vertical shooter based entirely around this most popular of typefaces.
Fans of side-scrolling run-and-gun blast-a-thons laud classics like Contra, but the connoisseurs always come back to Metal Slug. Hand-drawn cartoon soldiers perforated theatrical enemy grunts and tentacled aliens, and brought down screen-filling bosses with an arsenal of weapons and drivable vehicles. Just thinking about it makes us want to resurrect the corner arcade.
