Let’s get ready to turkeeeeeeyyyyy! Okay, maybe that’s a bit too excitement for gathering around the table with loved ones and carving up some unlucky bird, but it’s Thanksgiving Eve and the anticipation of a huge meal on Thursday coupled with the contact high of Black Friday sales must have us buzzing. And hey, there’s actually other stuff going on today that doesn’t relate to Turkey Day, so here’s all the news for Wednesday, November 23, 2011.
We’ve got three words for you today: Short work week! For our U.S. readers, Thanksgiving is this Thursday and many folks have an extra day off on Friday, which means you’ll have a longer weekend at play than you will working three days this week. (Our apologies to those of you who don’t get to enjoy that scenario. We feel your pain.) But there’s still plenty of news floating around the interwebs, and we’ve collected some of the best stuff for you to read on this fine Monday, November 21, 2011.
This started annoying me about twenty minutes ago, so I thought I'd write about it to express my discontent with the constant sharing that every app seems to do these days. This kind of constant posting is bound to get me "hidden" by my Facebook friends. Also, unsubscribed to. We wouldn't want that, now would we?
Not crazy about the changes made to Facebook this week? As it turns out, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at the company’s F8 event on Thursday to unveil the company’s new direction, which includes a new way to display your life and plenty of music and video content yet to come.
As great as a streaming music service as Spotify is, it’s sometimes easy to get lost among all those tracks. How can you find songs you’re truly interested in? The company is making it a bit easier this week, announcing a new partnership with SoundHound to aid in your discovery of new tracks -- although for right now, it’s only for our friends across the pond.
Being jealous of Europeans is not something we Americans typically excel at. Maybe that’s why Spotify became something of a nerd cause célèbre -- watching longingly as friends in Europe shared favorite tracks and playlists on Facebook and Twitter led to too much fantasizing about all of the awesome musical riches that we’d share once American record labels finally stopped doing their head-in-the-sand routine. And at last, Spotify has landed on U.S. shores…but while we were waiting, another impressive option popped up, leaving us to wonder if Spotify was worth the wait.
If we told you there were patents galore in this week's news, would that surprise you? Well, what if we told you iLife everywhere, Facebook and the BBC on the iPad, and a new king of the smartphone manufacturing world? Well, there's that and there's more in this week's hottest Apple news. Just make sure you don't burn before reading.
Poor Spotify. Not even a few weeks have passed since it finally debuted in the United States and already someone's doing everything they can to rid of 'em -- in this case, it's PacketVideo. The company -- one that you've never hard of, because I haven't either -- posits that Spotify committed patent infringement against their decade old streaming video idea, one that apparently never came to fruition (at least not to our knowledge). The actual patent in question is for a "device for the distribution of music information in digital form." But as TechDirt points out, this just sounds way too broad.
The week is truly and really at an end and no, kids, there was nary a Lion to be seen. So chalk up another bad call for the rumor mill. Will people remember this the next time they cry "wolf in Lion's clothing"? Will they nothing. We're creatures who crave novelty and anticipation and nothing we do will ever cure the rumor addiction. And so just in case you weren't by your computer's side 24/7 waiting for the biggest cat of all to go live, here's a few stories you might just have missed.
There was no Lion release party this week, like so many had predicted; and there were no hardware refreshes announced. But just you wait! shouts the rumor machine. Next week things are gonna go big big big. Well, we did get Spotify this week, which was a definite plus, so what the heck else happened in the land of Apple? Check out the top ten hottest news stories and get an eyeful yourself.
