As Jon Stewart put it during a recent iPhone skit on The Daily Show, “Our long national nightmare is almost over” -- that is, Verizon Wireless will begin accepting preorders for the iPhone 4 from existing customers one week from today.
There's good news this morning for Verizon iPhone customers: The company has officially announced that they will be offering an unlimited iPhone data plan for $30 a month. Given that AT&T did away with their unlimited data plan in favor of tiered pricing last summer for most iPhone users, this could be a very compelling reason to switch carriers.
No sooner does Verizon post its own commercial celebrating the imminent arrival of the iPhone 4 on their network than Apple plays the great equalizer, releasing a spot which makes it all about the handset and not the carrier.
The spotlight is back on the iPhone 4, with the first Verizon commercial hitting YouTube and new, slightly modified bumper cases that work with both carrier’s models making their way to an Apple Store near you.

On Tuesday, Verizon Wireless announced that they had finally wrestled iPhone 4 exclusivity from AT&T’s shackles after four years. Unfortunately, aside from swapping a GSM antenna for a CDMA model, the 3G-enabled handset is essentially the same -- despite Verizon’s big push for 4G LTE a week earlier at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
It’s less than a week since Verizon announced it would be carrying the iPhone beginning February 10, and already research firms are hard at work collecting data in an effort to predict how many AT&T customers might jump ship.
Now that the two largest carriers in the United States are both selling the iPhone, what is a smaller network to do? In T-Mobile’s case, they’re going on the offensive with a new commercial taking pot shots at their larger rivals’ slower networks.
